Have you received a letter about moving your benefits to Universal Credit?

Don’t worry, we’re here to help guide you through the changes. This process is called ‘managed migration’. We know that some of you may have heard about or received a letter regarding the change to Universal Credit, and we want to make sure you understand it and get the support you need to make the change.

What is Universal Credit?

Universal Credit (UC) is being introduced to replace the old benefit system with something simpler, to better support people living in the UK. The shift to Universal Credit is happening in stages and is expected to be completed by the end of 2025.

What is Managed Migration?

Managed migration refers to the process where people still receiving the old benefits will be moved to Universal Credit. These benefits, known as legacy benefits, include:

  • Housing Benefit
  • Child Tax Credit
  • Working Tax Credit
  • Income Support
  • Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA)
  • Income-related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA)

If you’re currently receiving one or more of these benefits, you’ll get or may have already received a migration notice letter. This letter will be to let you know that to continue receiving support, you must apply for Universal Credit by the deadline provided (which is three months from the letter’s date).

FAQs

If you’re selected, you’ll receive a migration notice letter. The letter will explain how to apply for Universal Credit and provide you with a deadline to get it done. It will also include useful links to help you make your claim and a dedicated helpline for further support.

Once you’ve applied for Universal Credit before your deadline date, you’ll need to verify your identity, accept your claimant commitment, and complete any necessary checks, just like with any other UC claim.

Transitional protection ensures that you won’t be worse off after moving from your old benefits on to Universal Credit. To qualify for transitional protection, you must apply by the date on your migration notice letter.
If your Universal Credit amount is lower than the benefits you were receiving before, transitional protection will make up the difference, so you don’t lose out.

If you don’t apply by the deadline on your letter, your old benefits will stop, and you’ll lose the right to transitional protection.  So, it’s really important to apply on time!
