Home adaptations
If you or someone living with you has a disability or is struggling to live independently, we might be able to help you adapt your home to make things easier for you. We’re committed to providing our customers with adaptations to make your home more accessible and help you live independently as much as possible.
What type of adaptations?
There are two types:
Minor adaptations
These usually cost less than £1,000 and are defined in the Manchester Services for Independent Living (MSIL) guidance and include internal or external grab rails, lever taps, and adjustments to electric sockets. Minor adaptations will normally be fitted without the requirement for an occupational therapist, and the full cost will be met by One Manchester.
Major adaptations
These usually cost more than £1,000 and again are defined by MSIL and can include but are not limited to: stairlifts, bathroom conversions, extensions, or through floor lifts. Major adaptations will be jointly funded by One Manchester and Manchester City Council via the Disabled Facilities Grant (DFG) managed by MSIL.
How to request an adaptation
You can request an adaptation directly through Manchester City Council by calling their team on 0161 234 5001 or by emailing mcsreply@manchester.gov.uk. View more details on their website here.
Alternatively, we can make the referral on your behalf. Please speak to your Neighbourhood Officer about your request and they can make a referral, as long as they have your permission to do so (find yours using our search function).
What happens next?
Once your referral has been made, Manchester Equipment and Adaptations Partnership will review it and contact you to arrange your initial assessment or Assessment of Need (AON). They will visit you at home to understand your needs and make a decision on what adaptations you would benefit from whether it’s a 'minor' or 'major' adaptation request.
Major adaptations:
Any major adaptations which would cost above £1,000 require our consent. We work with Manchester City Council to agree these adaptations which are completed by Manchester City Council on our behalf. You can find out more about timescales for major adaptations on the Manchester Equipment and Adaptations Partnership website.
Assessments need to be completed by a qualified Occupational Therapist. We can support you with the referral to Manchester City Council or make the referral on your behalf.
